SAN MIGUEL DEL MILAGRO

iglesia perto de San Miguel del Milagro, Tlaxcala, México

The church of San Miguel del Milagro in Nativitas, Tlaxcala is a excellent example of the ongoing development of ex-votos in the face of changing technology. In the photo gallery bellow, you will find examples of ‘original’ painted retablos, their tin derivatives for which Mexico is so famous, mixed media versions involving drawing and crafts, and finally, computer-made examples that utilize both figurative and realistic representations of miracles. Occasionally, an author or two will refer to the votive tradition as “dying” or “decreasing,” suggesting that the practice is largely a thing of the past. Being able to see so many recent variations of the tradition in a single site, however, suggests the continuity of votive practice over time.
